The Surfers Paradise Hilton is back in business today after Brookfield Multiplex finally took the reins of the stalled $700 million project yesterday afternoon.
After months of uncertainty and in the shadow of Tuesday night's mammoth Budget deficit, workers are set to move back on to the site this morning with high hopes that it will be a heart-starter for the city's faltering construction industry.
The deal between Multiplex, mortgagee the ANZ Bank and the Raptis Group has been signed after eight months of complex negotiations.
"There were a lot of issues that needed to be resolved," said George Kostas, Brookfield Multiplex's head of residential property.
He said this morning's activity would be all about 'mobilising' the site.
The deal was made possible through a major concession from the city council which has agreed to forgo about $2 million in community benefit contributions in light of Multiplex's bold estimates of what the Hilton will deliver to the Gold Coast economy.
